Project 1 Research

I wanted to break down the research into two parts: the first part being middle school targeted books; and the second being books that are well designed with typography.

First Part:

Second Part:
(all of which comes from both Communication Arts Typography Annuals)

Week 3 Type Treatments

I wanted to try two different type treatments with this one quote. I think the first one is much better (because this was the last one I did) and the second one was more of an experiment trying to use "design is" as the separating element.

HW3 Layouts

From the random article, I got Theo Altmeyer, who seems to be an interesting fellow. And my random picture is of this little girl.

Both of the layouts I emulated were from page 62, the first was of Josef Muller-Brockman's 1953 magazine cover layout. I thought it was very cool how it had the picture in the background with different color blocks. Since my picture was very similar, I chose the same layout, but with different colors.

The second layout I chose was emulating the early 1400s  - 1800s posters (a.k.a. "broadsheets") by having the image on the top and the text separated into columns.

Week 2 Type Treatment

I'm definitely continuing to work on creating more effective type, which is why I think these assignments are going to be so beneficial. Giving it my first shot!

Week 2 Assignment - White Space

I found this picture from Communication Arts Typography Annual 1 and thought this was a great example of white space. The reason is because if you were to clutter everything all together, it would look just like a bunch of symbols. Also, if you had spread the text below further or closer together, it would feel really uncomfortable. Even the use of the typographic elements themselves make this poster so great!
